Endurance: The Side of Faith We Don’t Talk About Enough

Recently, I’ve been spending time in the book of James, and it has been stirring something fresh in my heart about the life of faith. He says, “Count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing this, that the trying of your faith works patience.” (James 1:2–3)

Count it all joy? In the middle of pressure? When things aren’t going the way you expected? That’s not always our first response. But James doesn’t just tell us what to do, he shows us why. The trying of your faith is producing something. It is working patience.

That word patience can also be understood as endurance. And this is where so many believers miss it. We often think of faith only in terms of immediate results, quick answers, sudden breakthroughs, instant change. And while those things are real and part of God’s power, they are not the whole picture.

Faith is not just about the moment of victory. It’s about the life that leads up to it.

There’s a difference between strength and endurance. Strength can lift something heavy once. Endurance keeps going when the pressure doesn’t let up. Strength can produce a quick result. Endurance carries you through until the result manifests. And the life of faith requires both, but especially endurance.

In fact, Romans 1:17 tells us, “The just shall live by faith.” That means faith is not just something we use occasionally; it’s how we live every day. And if we’re going to live by faith, then we must develop the ability to stay with it. To not let go of what God has said, even when circumstances try to say something different.

The truth is, your faith was never designed to sit idle. It was given to you to push back against what’s pushing against you. Think about it this way. A motor doesn’t show what it can really do when it’s just idling. It shows its power when it’s under load. In the same way, your faith reveals its strength when it has something to overcome.

So when you find yourself facing resistance, don’t assume you’re off track. It may be that your faith is right where it’s supposed to be, engaged, active, and working.

Remember, God is not the source of your trial. He is not the one bringing difficulty into your life to teach you something through hardship. According to James 1:13, God does not tempt with evil. Jesus said the thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy, but He (Jesus) came that you might have life, and have it more abundantly (John 10:10). So, if it steals, kills, or destroys, it’s not from God.

No matter what comes against you, God has already equipped you with more than enough to overcome it. There is no test, no pressure, no situation that can defeat the person who will stay in faith and refuse to quit.

The enemy doesn’t have the power to defeat you, but he will try to outlast you. He will try to wear you down, to get you to give up, to convince you that it’s not working. But the moment you quit is the only moment he has a chance. As long as you stay in faith, the outcome is already settled.

Abraham was given a promise, but it took years to come to pass. Joseph had a dream, but he went through betrayal and prison before he saw fulfillment. Paul faced pressure on every side, yet he declared, “We are troubled, but not distressed; perplexed, but not in despair; cast down, but not destroyed.” (2 Corinthians 4:8-9)

What do all of these have in common?

They endured. They didn’t quit. And because they endured, they inherited what God had promised.

Friend, if you’re in a season right now where it feels like you’ve been standing for a while, I want to encourage you. Don’t misinterpret the season you’re in. You’re not failing. You’re not being overlooked. You’re not forgotten. You’re developing endurance. And that endurance is what will carry you all the way through to the fulfillment of what God has promised.

James 1:12 says, “Blessed is the man who endures, for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life.” Because the same God who gave you the promise is the One who will bring it to pass. And your victory is not in question, as long as you refuse to quit.I’m standing in faith with you today, that a renewed strength and endurance rise up on the inside of you, and that you’ll see clearly that what you’re walking through is not the end of the story. It’s part of the process that leads to victory. And victory is coming.
