Are you hearing what God is speaking to you—specifically to you? During the decades I pastored, one thing people seemed to struggle with and had many questions regarding was learning to discern the voice of God so they could hear Him when He was speaking to them.
I truly believe that in order to live a successful life during this time on earth, it takes knowing the voice of God, and once He has spoken, immediate obedience. As a parent, when I was raising my children, it was important that my children learned my voice at a young age and obeyed immediately. I ONLY desired good for them, and as a result, anything I told them, was intended to produce good.
Our heavenly Father is no different. In fact, Matthew 7:11 says, if ye then being evil (or natural) know how to give good things to your children, how much more shall your father which is in heaven give to those that ask. HOW MUCH MORE!
Continuing last month’s letter, we offer two more common hindrances to hearing from God and their respective hearing aids.
Hindrance: Self-consciousness. Often we are not listening to what is being said because we are thinking of what we are going to say next.
Companies often use memory courses to help their representatives learn to remember other peoples’ names. Statistics tell us that the name a person hears most clearly is his own and while introductions are going on he is concentrating on how he is going to present himself.
This type of behavior can occur while God is trying to talk to us too. When you are talking you don’t learn anything more than you know.
Hearing Aid: Study to be quiet.
James 1:19, Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.
Proverbs 10:19, In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise.
Cultivate the habit of being quick to hear and slow to speak. In First Kings 19:12 God spoke to Elijah in a still small voice. You must be quiet to hear a still, small voice. One translation renders it, a tiny whispering sound.
People who have spiritual ears to hear are slow to speak.
Hindrance: Loss of hope.
Giving up hope will destroy you. Every child of God is a believer and has been given the measure of faith. And yet there are those who are shipwrecked, who have turned sour on God, who have even gone home to be with the Lord prematurely because something robbed them of hope.
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen (Hebrews 11:1). Hope must be present so that faith will have something to give substance to.
Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: by whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, HOPE: and hope maketh not ashamed, because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost (Romans 5:1-5).
Hearing Aid: Let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing (James 1:4).
Maintain hope in any adverse circumstance by being patient. Experience alone does not produce hope. In fact, some experiences will rob you of hope. Hope is produced by experience ONLY if patience is present.
The son God promised Abraham didn’t arrive in nine months, or nine years. Twenty-five years passed before Isaac was born. Abraham clung to the Word of the Lord and refused to give up. Patience means: consistency, sameness, long-suffering, being the same over a period of time, not wavering. Patience holds you steady between the “I believe I receive,” and the “There it is!” There is always going to be a time between the two; otherwise there would be no need for faith
Feelings, symptoms, and circumstances will come against you like a roller coaster during that period. You are a spirit being—you are not your emotions. Choose to stand steady, steadfast, patient on the Word of God, not wavering, not changing, not being double-minded. Take one step at a time in faith
Hearing from God will bring the answer. You can hear what God has to say to you. He wants you to hear! So if you have experienced any of these hindrances, use the hearing aids available and open yourself up to the blessings of God!
