I recently returned from a very fruitful trip to Brazil. For eleven years I have been ministering there to men and women who are hungry for the Word and the move of the Spirit. The ministry was begun by my friend, Reverend Bud Wright, a good ol’ country boy from Alabama, who heard from God and moved his family to Brazil to preach Jesus and faith. Bud went home to be with Jesus a couple years ago but the same spirit of faith that was on Bud has now spread across the nation. Each time I go I am stirred to see how the spirit of faith truly is caught.
Through the years I have watched people sit in the same church services, go to the same Bible school, hear the same teachers, and come up under the same mentors. Some will go out and accomplish great things for the Kingdom of God, while others always seem to be struggling. Some rise up and conquer in the face of adversity, while others move from one crisis to another, never realizing any success. These are people who have heard the Word of God, they have studied and seem to have applied faith in their circumstances, and yet they are unproductive in many areas of their lives. While others are blessed and moving from glory to glory, they stay the same or even go backwards.
Why is that? What makes the difference? In questioning the Lord about this some years ago, the Holy Spirit led me to the answer in His Word.
2 Corinthians 4:13, We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak.
When you were born again, God gave you the measure of faith. Faith is not just a subject to be expounded upon, dissected, studied, and committed to memory. It is the essence of who you are. You are a faith being because you were spiritually born of a God of faith.
God has given you the measure of faith. Your regenerated spirit received that measure of faith when you were born again. But it gets even better. In Galatians 2:20 Paul says, I live by the faith of the Son of God. And Ephesians 2:8 tells us, By grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God. In other words, you were given the same faith Jesus has!
The Holy Spirit who lives in you is always imparting faith, which is one of the fruits of the Spirit. But there is something more. There is a dynamic, life-altering spirit of faith that goes forth and does exploits. The spirit of faith compels you to act, demonstrating the life of God and the devil’s defeat in everything you do.
College football is BIG in Alabama where I live. People understand about team spirit and identifying with something bigger than themselves. Even if they never went to college, you would never know it to hear them talk. They can tell you everything about their team, their coach, their game plays, everybody their team ever beat, and the score of each game. That’s team spirit, and they may have never even touched a football.
Like someone with school spirit, a believer who has caught the spirit of faith has a heart attitude that is always positive, encouraging, and is aggressively pursuing the things of God. The spirit of faith speaks and acts like God and gets the same results. Believers who have caught the spirit of faith identify with their team, and the Captain of their salvation, Jesus. They see themselves as children of the Most High God, operating in His kind of faith. They know who their opponent is, what he can and cannot do, and they consistently rehearse their victories over him. Faith in God and His Word is the basis of everything they think, say and do.
One primary way that the spirit of faith is caught is by hearing God’s Word from others who have it. When I began my faith journey, I caught the spirit of faith by constantly hearing the Word ministered by my spiritual father, Rev. Kenneth E. Hagin. There were other wonderful faith teachers I listened to, but my primary source was Dad Hagin. In the same way, the churches in Brazil that are bursting at the seams with people and building buildings during an economic downturn caught the spirit of faith by listening to the Word preached by those who carried the spirit of faith.
Friend, the same principle applies to you. We don’t catch the spirit of faith and operate in God’s faith by having heard the Word. It works by constantly feeding your spirit on the Word preached by those who have the spirit of faith.
As we enter this last quarter of 2018, I encourage you to stir yourself up regarding the spirit of faith because it is available to every single believer. God is so good, so faithful, and this life of faith that He has provided contains tremendous rewards!
