What an honor it is to be entrusted with the most powerful tool there ever was and ever will be. The Word of God has never failed, and it never will. You possess everything you need to overcome any obstacle, situation, or circumstance.
While I was meditating the other day, this thought came to me. If you have a flashlight in your hand and you are outside during the day, it doesn’t have much significance to you, does it? But when it is dark outside and you need to see your way around, that flashlight suddenly becomes a precious tool, and you don’t want to be caught outside without it. So it is in these last days. As this world gets darker, the light that is alive and working in us is more critical to our success.
Second Corinthians 4:13 says, “We having the same spirit of faith. I believed and therefore have I spoken; we also believe and therefore speak;”
The spirit of faith is an attitude of faith—a can-do attitude. People with the spirit of faith not only see themselves the way God sees them, but they also speak what God says about them. The spirit of faith doesn’t allow the limits of the world to dictate their destiny. It takes God at His Word, knowing that He will see them through. You and I have this same spirit of faith.
Then there is another spirit that I want to mention to you. It is one to be guarded against at all costs. It is the spirit of antichrist. First John 4:3-4 says, “…and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world. Ye are of God little children, and have overcome them; because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”
Often when we refer to the antichrist, we think in terms of a person or an individual. But in this passage, it is talking about a spirit which already exists in the world today.
As more time passes, I see so clearly how everything in this world is at work to change your self-image from what God says you are to what satan wants you to be. This is the spirit of antichrist and if you don’t learn to recognize it and call it what it is, then it will cause you to lose sight of who you are in Christ.
In Numbers 13 and 14, we see a beautiful illustration of this. Moses sent men to spy out the land of promise. You know the story. Only two came back with a “can-do” attitude. The rest were scared and fearful, and didn’t believe that they could take the land that God had promised them. However, the thing that defeated them is found in Numbers 13:33, “…and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers…” It was how they saw themselves that defeated them. They made assumptions based on their own insecurities, assuming that the “giants” felt the same way. The end result was that they missed out on all that God had provided for them.
How do you see yourself? Do you see yourself in light of what you hear on the news? Do you see yourself fitting into the mold of this economy? Or do you see yourself the way God sees you, as an overcomer?
It is so important to guard your self-image. If you fall prey to the spirit of antichrist like these people did in Numbers, then you too will miss out on all God has provided for you.
There is a solution, so that you don’t fall prey to the spirit of antichrist found in verse 4 of First John. “Ye are of God little children, and have overcome them; because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”
Recognize the Greater One is on the inside of you, and act like it. Talk about it. Do not pick up the talk of the world! The next time you hear someone griping about the gas prices, put a smile on your face, knowing that your God supplies all your needs. The more you exercise yourself to recognizing the spirit of antichrist, the harder it will be to fall prey to it.
Concerning the world, remember this: if you are going to talk their talk, then you are going to walk their walk. It’s not worth it. God has given you and me the spirit of faith and it must be guarded and cultivated. Do not let what others do and say get into you. You are called to something greater because the Greater One is in you.
I want to encourage you today to hold fast to your confession of faith. Now is NOT the time to let your guard down. The Greater One is in you, and as long as you yield to Him, He will put you over every time.
