The Journey From Promise to Possession

Have you ever known what God promised, yet struggled with what to do next?

Recently, I have been spending time studying in the book of James, and once again, I am reminded of a powerful truth: faith was never intended to be passive. James tells us plainly, “Be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves” (James 1:22).

That verse reaches right to the heart of the matter. Faith is not simply hearing God’s Word. Faith is hearing, believing, speaking, and acting upon what God has said.

So many believers think of faith as something they pull off the shelf only when a crisis arises. They need healing, so they try faith. They face a financial challenge, so they attempt to believe God. But faith is not a tool you use only occasionally.

According to Romans 1:17, “The just shall LIVE by faith.” In other words, faith is not an event. It is, by far, the most rewarding way of life.

Many years ago, when our church was believing God for our first building, the Lord spoke very clearly to me. He said, “Ask Me for that building, and I’ll give it to you.” So do you know what I did? I asked Him for it, and every day, I thanked God for that building. I drove by it and declared, “Thank You, Lord. That’s our building. You said You would give it to us.”

He then led me to make an offer on the building, so I did. When I presented it to the seller, he actually laughed at it. Regardless, I continued to thank God for the building. I knew what He had told me, and I refused to let anything or anyone talk me out of it.

In fact, the first time Jerry Savelle ever spoke at my church, we drove past that building on the way to the storefront where we were meeting. I told Brother Jerry, “The next time you come speak at our church, that’s the building we will be in!” He kindly nodded in agreement and asked a few questions about it. However, after the service, after having experienced the faith in our church, as we drove it, he boldly declared, “Next time I’m in town, THAT’S the building I’ll speak in!”

Well, days turned into weeks. Weeks turned into months. And months turned into a year. After about a year had passed, the businessman who laughed at my original offer came back and put the exact same offer in front of me. And we took possession of our building that God promised me!

Friend, there are times when the Lord will speak something to your heart. It may concern your family, your health, your finances, or your future. In that moment, hearing is essential. But hearing is only the beginning. What you do next matters greatly.

The question is not whether God is faithful. The question is: What are you doing with what He has said? Are your words aligned with His promise? Are your actions corresponding with your confession?

Remember this: faith is not passive, nor is it measured by how things look. Faith is measured by your response to what God has said. The enemy’s goal is often not to defeat you outright, but to wear you down until you quit. As long as you refuse to quit, victory remains inevitable.

Galatians 6:9 tells us, “Let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” God has not called you to admire His promises from a distance. He has called you to possess them, and possession always requires corresponding action. No matter what challenge stands before you, faith will overcome it.

I often think about the woman with the issue of blood in Mark chapter five. For twelve long years, she suffered. She had exhausted her resources. She had consulted every physician available. Yet instead of improving, she grew worse. Then something changed. The Bible says, “When she had heard of Jesus…” (Mark 5:27). Hearing is always where faith begins.

She heard that Jesus was healing the sick. She heard that the power of God was flowing through Him. She heard that what was impossible with man was possible with God. But she did not stop at hearing. She began to say, “If I may touch but His clothes, I shall be whole” (Mark 5:28). Notice that. She said it before she saw it. Her words strengthened her resolve. Her confession fueled her actions. She pushed through the crowd, reached out, touched His garment, and immediately the power of God went into her body.

Jesus said, “Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole” (Mark 5:34). What was her faith? She heard. She said. She acted. And the result followed.

As you continue to stand on God’s promises, I want to encourage you not to let time, opposition, or circumstances move you. If God has spoken to your heart, stay with His Word. Keep saying what He said. Keep acting in faith. Keep thanking Him before you ever see the manifestation because faith that refuses to quit will always produce results in due season.
