The Peace You Want Is the Peace You Buildfeatured

A little over a month ago, our entire family gathered for my granddaughter’s wedding. She is the first of my grandchildren to step into that sacred covenant, and watching her and her new husband begin their life together stirred something deep in me. Marriage is joyful, but it is also intentional. You do not drift into peace. You do not stumble into unity. You build it.

As I watched them say their vows through words of love, honor, and commitment, I realized the same truth applies to the season now before us. If you want the most enjoyable Christmas you’ve ever had, you cannot leave it to chance. You build it the same way you build a home, a marriage, or a life – with purpose, with guardrails, and with a heart that chooses peace.

That truth took me back to a verse in Deuteronomy where God speaks in a way that still challenges us today.

Deuteronomy 22:8, “When you build a new house, then you shall make a battlement for thy roof, that thou bring not blood upon thine house, if any man fall from thence.”

I love the way God begins. Not “if” you build a house, but “when.” He sees you as a builder. You may not be framing walls with lumber, but every day you are building something—your home, your future, your walk with God, your influence, your family’s atmosphere.

There is new construction, renovation, maintenance, and restoration. Some of us are laying foundations. Some are repairing old places. Some are in a season of upkeep. But no matter our age or season, none of us is finished. We keep building because the day we stop building is the day we stop growing and progressing.

My granddaughter and her husband are building together, but so are you. Even if your children are grown, even if your hair has turned gray, even if you’re taking on new responsibilities later in life, you are still building something. And God wants you to build with intention.

That is why He told Israel to add battlements—guardrails—to their rooftops. Those ancient roofs were flat and used like patios. Without guardrails, a moment of joy could turn into a fall. God cared enough about their safety, their families, and their future to say, “Put a barrier here. Protect this place.”

The same is true spiritually. Your heart, your home, your marriage, and your walk with God need guardrails. They are not signs of restriction; they are signs of care. They keep you from falling and keep danger from creeping in.

Proverbs 4:23 puts this responsibility in simple terms: “Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life.”

“Keep” means guard, protect, and maintain. The battlements around your life begin in the heart, but the way you guard the heart is found in the following verse.

Proverbs 4:24, “Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee.”

Jesus reinforced this in Matthew chapter 12 when He said, “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks,” and “By your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

Your guardrails are made of what you choose to say and what you refuse to say.

James 3 tells us that if a person can control their words, they can steer their entire life. That means the first place we stumble is with the mouth. And the first place we recover is with the mouth. You build or break with what you say.

This truth matters all the more as we step into the Christmas season. It is easy to let pressure, busyness, old frustrations, or outside noise shape the atmosphere in your home, but you do not have to let that happen. You get to build the atmosphere you live in.

Galatians 5 shows us exactly what kind of building material the Spirit produces: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance. These are not just traits. They are construction materials. And your words are what carry them into your home.

Your home can be a place where love is spoken, joy is felt, and peace settles upon those who enter like a warm light. Phyllis and I have experienced this in our home for many years now, and you can too. It’s available to anyone who chooses to build it one word at a time.

As we come into Christmas, make a decision: this year will not be left to chance. You will build it. You will put guardrails in place. You will guard your heart by guarding your mouth. You will speak life into your home, your family, and your own soul. And you will enjoy the fruit of it.

I want to encourage you to take a simple step this month. Stand in your home and speak blessing. Dedicate it again as a place of peace. Say, “This home is filled with love. This home is filled with joy. This home is filled with peace. We guard our hearts here. We guard our words here. We honor God here.” After all, this is a season when we celebrate and honor our blessed Prince of Peace.

We love you. We bless you. And we stand with you as you build.
