Each year around this time people are reminded to be thankful, but Thanksgiving is far more than a holiday to be celebrated once a year. It is a no-fail solution to all that God has promised us day after day, and this testimony is a great illustration of just that!

For a couple of years their house remained on the market…it was a difficult time to sell a house. One day Erica realized it was time to get the entire family involved! She and Michael decided to bring the kids in on this faith project, so every night as they sat down at the table for supper, they would end their prayer with, “…and Lord, we thank you that our house is sold.”

After sitting on the market for years, within a few short weeks their house sold! It was an eye-opening experience for the kids especially. Then they decided to put their faith on the next task at hand—their daughter, Brooke, was trying to get into a particular school. While she had passed the exam with a grade sufficient to enter, there were only a couple of spots available, and she was competing with many other students for those spots. So, they directed their faith toward Brooke’s acceptance into the school and ended every prayer with, “…and Lord, we thank you that Brooke gets into this school.”

I am sure you can guess what happened—she got in! They then decided to get the family involved in another area. The family who purchased their home asked for their kitchen table to be included in the sale and they agreed to it. So, they needed a new kitchen table. By this time, the kids were competing to pray at supper so they could end the prayer with, “…and Lord, we thank you for our new kitchen table.”

As you probably know, the kitchen table came in addition to a new home and a new job. This was a unique season, and one that will have an impact on their children for years to come.

There are two things I thought about when I heard this testimony

  1. The power behind a family joining their faith together.
  2. The importance of expressing our faith through thanksgiving.

Power Behind a Family in Faith

When Phyllis and I were raising our children, one of the things we planted in them was the power of agreement where a family is concerned. For instance, any time we were led to prepare for purchasing a new home we would gather the family together, and with pen and paper in hand, we would write down what we all desired. Then we would take it to the Lord and move forward as He showed us to do so.

It’s important that parents do not overlook opportunities such as these. They mark a child’s heart, and those seeds will produce down the road for them.

You know as well as I do that Satan has launched an all-out attack on the family—not just the family of God, but the natural family as well. But just because he is out to destroy the family, does not mean that he can!

I Peter 5:8 says, Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: whom resist steadfast in the faith

One of the greatest ways to resist the devil where your family is concerned is to surround them with faith and love every day, and you do this by not only praying for them but praying with them. As a family, take on a faith project. Everybody wants a strong family, and seeing God’s Word performed as a result of a family’s faith is a sure-fire way to strengthen your family.

Expressing Faith through Thanksgiving

I Thessalonians 5:18 says, In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. No matter who you are, where you are, or what you are doing, giving thanks IS the will of God for you! It is the expression of your faith, and when your faith is properly expressed, things happen!

Sadly, people spend more time worrying, complaining, and murmuring than they do rejoicing, and this attitude will keep them in the exact same spot for years to come. Do you remember the story of the ten lepers who cried out to Jesus for healing? Only one of them expressed thankfulness, and this is the one who was restored whole.

What do you want your story to be? Are you okay with staying where you are for years to come or do you want to experience the life that Jesus purchased for you? Thankfulness will take you there!

Child of God, you already have ownership rights to health, wealth, peace, happiness, wisdom, and everything else you can imagine, but it is up to you to possess it. Whatever you can thank God for before you see it, God will let you see it.

Develop an attitude of gratefulness, and then get into the habit of expressing thanksgiving continually. Just like Michael and Erica saw victory after victory from the simple expression of their faith, you too will see your victory!
